Chiefs sign Page

The Kansas City Chiefs have signed safety Jarrad Page to a contract, those terms of the deal have not yet been released. He signed his tender offer from the team.

Page was drafted by the Chiefs in the seventh round in 2006 but has turned out to be one of the most important picks in recent years, as he quickly claimed a starting job.

The Chiefs’ defense was very young and inexperienced last year, particularly in the secondary. Page did his best to help alleviate some of those experience problems.

He has 185 tackles, 10 sacks, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries in his 48 game NFL career. The team is hoping he can step up even more this season.

Chiefs happy with Johnson

The Kansas City Chiefs and new head coach Todd Haley are very pleased with running back Larry Johnson and his work ethic so far this offseason.

Haley said Johnson made several runs that really impressed him during the first few practices of the offseason and believes that Johnson could be set for another big season.

Johnson had demanded to be traded from the Chiefs and was suspended by both the NFL and the team last year for several run-ins with the law that brough negative publicity along with it.

The running back has not rescinded his trade demand yet, but news surrounding the request has been very quiet the past few months. My guess is he remains with the Chiefs.

He would be hard to trade anyway given that the Chiefs would have a tough time getting anything back for him after last year’s troubles.

Chiefs want to improve return game

The Kansas City Chiefs were known for having one of the top kick and punt return teams in the NFL for quite some time, but things changed drastically the past couple of years.

After riding Tamarick Vanover and then Dante Hall for a number of seasons, the Chiefs ranked at the bottom of the NFL last year with their kick return games.

Special teams is an area where new head coach Todd Haley really wants to improve. He feels like just improving that area can make a big difference for the team.

Obviously the Chiefs can use all the help they can get after finishing last year with the third worst record in the NFL, and special teams would be a great starting point.

It would help that offense and new quarterback Matt Cassell to put them in good field position on a regular basis.

Chiefs name Thum president

The Kansas City Chiefs have named Denny Thum the president of the team.

Thum certainly is deserving of the appointment, having served in the team’s front office for 35 years.

He will share the power with general manager Scott Pioli, who was hired away from the New England Patriots in the offseason and has already made a number of moves to put his stamp on the franchise.

It will be interesting to see how the two men co-exist, although it seems like Thum knows his role having spent so many years in the organization working under the president and GM.

He began working with the Chiefs in 1974 and has served as the executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Chiefs select Jackson

The Kansas City Chiefs were unable to trade down out of the No. 3 pick, so they selected defensive end Tywon Jackson from LSU.

General manager Scott Pioli really liked Jackson and felt he was the best fit for their 3-4 defensive scheme.

Jackson was expected to be drafted somewhere between picks No. 10 and No. 15, so it was a bit of a reach by Pioli.

Then again, he isn’t afraid to take some risks and wanted to make sure he got the best fit for his team.

In doing so, Pioli passed up on linebacker Aaron Curry, rated by many as the top player in the draft.
