Thigpen Traded to Dolphins

On the heels of Dolphins QB Chad Pennington’s season ending shoulder injury, Miami headed right to work this week trying to find a viable replacement to back up second-year QB Chad Henne of Michigan. Henne is expected to get his first NFL start against the Buffalo Bills on Sunday.

The Dolphins found their guy buried on the roster of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Dolphins traded an undisclosed draft pick for third-string QB Tyler Thigpen, who became relegated to the bench when QB Matt Cassel came to town from New England in the offseason.

Thigpen is a third year pro who started 11 games for the Chiefs last year after QB Brodie Croyle went down with an injury. He threw for 2,608 yards with 18 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, often doing just enough to give the Chiefs a chance at winning last season.

Rookie Pat White is the Dolphins’ other QB.

Head coach Tony Sparano has his hands full trying to figure out how to list his three QBs on his game day roster – if he intends on using White in the Wildcat offense, Sparano must list White as the team’s second QB, leaving Thigpen as the third QB. But, if Thigpen sees game action as the third-string QB, White and Henne would not be allowed to return to the field during that game.

Chiefs crushed by Eagles, 34-14

The Kansas City Chiefs put up little resistance against the Philadelphia Eagles in a 34-14 defeat.

Quarterback Matt Cassel really struggled against Philadelphia’s stingy defense, passing for just one touchdown.

The running game was pretty much non-existent, as veteran Larry Johnson couldn’t find any open holes.

The Chiefs are now 0-3 on the season and seem to have played worse with each passing contest.

Vick only one held in check as Eagles rout Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs shut down Michael Vick in his first game since being released from prison.

That was about the only thing they got right on Sunday.

The Chiefs were dismantled by the Philadelphia Eagles, allowing Kevin Kolb to pick apart the defense for 327 yards passing and two touchdowns in a 34-14 loss. The Eagles jumped out to a 24-7 lead and never looked back.

The story of the game was Vick, who threw two incomplete passes and rushed for seven yards, but the story of the Chiefs’ season looks like it’s going to be its offense, or lack thereof. Quarterback Matt Cassell threw for just 90 yards, and the running game couldn’t get going against a physical Eagles defense. As a result, Kansas City fell to 0-3, and with games against the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys looming, it looks like it’s going to get worse before it gets better for rookie head coach Todd Haley.

Chiefs fall to Raiders, 13-10

In one of the ugliest games we will see played all year, the Kansas City Chiefs fell to the Oakland Raiders, 13-10.

The loss was particularly disappointing for the Chiefs given that they were playing at home and gave up the game-winning score with just over one minute to play in the game.

Running back Larry Johnson had a disappointing day, running 24 times for 78 yards. He did have another 41 yards on three catches.

Quarterback Matt Cassel’s two interceptions proved to be very costly, as turnovers proved to be the difference in the game.

The 0-2 Chiefs are still in the AFC West race, but they need to get things turned around in a hurry.

Chiefs fall to Ravens, 38-24

The Kansas City Chiefs put up a strong effort against the heavily favored Baltimore Ravens but simply didn’t have the talent level to pull out a big road win.

The 38-24 loss is not reflective of how tight the game really was. The Chiefs had the game tied up and the Ravens on the ropes until fairly late in the fourth quarter.

It is worth mentioning that the Chiefs did score their points in strange ways and that they were heavily outgained in total yardage by Baltimore.

Nonetheless, it was a solid effort from a group with a rookie head coach and starting their backup quarterback because of a knee injury to Matt Cassel.

Things should be easier for the Chiefs next week when they host the hapless Oakland Raiders.

Cassel’s Status Unknown for Week 2

New Chiefs coach Todd Haley is unwilling to definitively decide whether QB Matt Cassel will return to the playing field this week, as he continues to rehab an injury to his left knee.

The Chiefs dropped their season opener to the Baltimore Ravens by a score of 38-24, as Haley only ruled Cassel unavailable hours before kickoff. QB Brodie Croyle stepped in and performed well enough to keep the Ravens in the game, completing 16 of 24 passes for 177 yards and two TDs (with one INT).

Cassel signed a six-year, $63 million deal in the offseason with the Chiefs.

“Matt is doing everything he can to be ready,” Haley said. “I would hope I would know a little sooner this week, although right now I can’t give a definitive answer. But the player’s doing everything he can to be ready, which generally helps speed the healing process.”
