Chiefs stun Steelers, 27-24

The Kansas City Chiefs rallied back to stun the Pittsburgh Steelers in overtime, 27-24.

The Chiefs knocked quarterback Ben Roethlisberger out of the game in overtime on a knee to the helmet.

Before the injury, Roethlisberger did manage to pass for well over 350 yards and three touchdowns.

Wide receiver Hines Ward finished with over 120 yards receiving and a touchdown to lead the Steelers.

The Steelers must quickly rebound and get back on track with next week’s game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Bowe suspended four games

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe has been suspended for four games by the NFL.

Bowe tested positive for a performance-enhancing drug which we now know to be a diurectic.

Bowe said he was trying to lose weight in training camp this year and took a weight loss supplement.

His agent said that he in no way took a performance-enhancing substance and that he is very sorry about the suspension.

The Chiefs are now put in a tough situation as their struggling offense has now lost their star playmaker.

Bowe Suspended Four Games for Violating NFL Drug Policy

Chiefs wide receiver Dwayne Bowe was suspended on Tuesday for four games for violating the NFL’s anti-drug policy. Bowe does not plan on appealing the suspension.

The suspension, which begins immediately, stems from Bowe using diuretics during training camp to try and lose weight.

The Chiefs said Tuesday that they would have no further comment. Bowe is eligible to return Week 15, for the last three games of the season.

Bowe is a third-year pro from LSU who was drafted in the first round by Kansas City in 2007. He played in all 16 games in the 2007-08 season, starting 15 of them, where he made 70 catches for 995 yards and five touchdowns. He set franchise season records by a rookie with his reception and receiving yard totals.

Bowe only improved last year, starting all 16 games for the Chiefs last season, and finishing with 86 catches (another franchise single-season record) for 1,022 yards and seven touchdowns.

In his 40-game NFL career, Bowe has caught 189 passes for 2,483 yards (13.1 YPC) and 16 TDs.

Chiefs Score Revenge Win Over Raiders, 16-10

When two terrible NFL teams meet, one of the most unfortunate results of the game is that one of the teams has to end up the winner. This week, the Chiefs earned their second victory of the season when they traveled to the Black Hole to take on the Oakland Raiders.

The Chiefs, the worst team in the NFL since the middle of 2007, have not managed many victories since then, however; they manage to conjure the winning magic when they come to Oakland. Their 16-10 victory on Sunday marked the seventh straight road victory for the Chiefs in the Oakland-Kansas City series.

“I guess we got a winning streak here,” receiver Dwayne Bowe said. “Every time we play a division team our goal is to win. But every time we play the Raiders, it’s always a hated rivalry and coach stressed it all during the week: Hate the Raiders, we’ve got to beat the Raiders.”

The Chiefs managed to turn that hate into their first rushing TD of the season, when backup RB Jamaal Charles broke off a 44-yard run in the second quarter that knotted the game at 10-all. Charles rotated with RB Kolby Smith, who started, as an attempt to replace Larry Johnson, who the Chiefs parted ways with last week.

“I feel like I’m getting the opportunity to play,” Charles said. “I’m really trying to take over at the spot. I don’t just want to take over, I want to win so it’s not all about taking over the job, it’s who can make plays.”

The Raiders broke out to an early start, scoring all 10 of their points in the fourth quarter (on the season, the Chiefs have been outscored 62-9 in the first quarter). But the Chiefs remained calm and locked down on defense, not allowing the Raiders to score the rest of the game. Things got so bad for the Raiders offense that coach Tom Cable benched QB JaMarcus Russell in favor of Bruce Gradkowski in the second half.

Chiefs sneak past Raiders, 16-10

The Kansas City Chiefs fell behind early but rallied back for a 16-10 victory over the rival Oakland Raiders.

Running back Jamaal Charles has taken over after the release of Larry Johnson and did well in his first game as a starter.

Charles ran for more than 100 yards, including a 44-yard touchdown, to provide most of Kansas City’s offense.

Kansas City fell behind early, 10-0, but their defense steadied itself from there and shut down Oakland the rest of the day.

It’s still a concern to see how much Matt Cassel continues to struggle after the team invested so much in him in the offseason.

Chiefs cut Johnson

After all of the controversy surrounding running back Larry Johnson, the Kansas City Chiefs have cut him.

Johnson was just 75 yards away from setting the franchise record for career rushing yards, something Chiefs fans were very upset about.

He would have overtaken Priest Holmes’ record, and he remains one of the most beloved players to ever don a Chiefs uniform.

Johnson is likely to clear waivers, at which point several teams interested in a veteran running back may sign him.

He is hoping to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the team he wanted to draft him coming out of college.

Chiefs Release RB Larry Johnson

In what can only be classified as a startling move, the Chiefs released former Pro-Bowl RB Larry Johnson from their active roster today.

Johnson was due to come off a suspension stemming from an incident where he used homosexual slurs regarding his coach on his Twitter account, and to the media the next day. He had been fined one-week’s paycheck for his suspension, which cost him somewhere around $310,000.

The team released a two-paragraph statement on Monday listing his statistics and announcing his release. He needed 75 rushing yards to break the franchise’s all-time rushing mark (set by Priest Holmes).

“A part of him is excited and a part of him is very regretful,” Johnson’s agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press. “There’s a lot of feelings going on right now. It’s analogous to breaking up with a girlfriend. Maybe you saw it coming, but it still hurts when it happens.”

Johnson set an NFL single-season record in 2006 when he carried the ball 416 times. He set a franchise record in 2006 by gaining 1,789 yards on those carries.

Johnson was drafted in the first round of 2003 out of Penn State. The team will now likely turn to Jamaal Charles for lead-back duties.

Chiefs reach settlement with Johnson

The Kansas City Chiefs and running back Larry Johnson have reached a settlement on his fine and suspension.

The running back will be suspended for two weeks and fined $300,000 for the comments he made via Twitter.

The team initially fined Johnson $600,000 but then became concerned about the NFLPA getting involved.

To avoid their involvement and get past the situation, both sides came together and agree to the terms above.

That’s strike two for Johnson, and another incident will likely mean his release.

Safety Page Placed on IR

The Chiefs could be down to their third-string safety this weekend, as they placed three-year starter Jarrad Page on injured reserve this week.

Veteran Jon McGraw, who had started in Page’s place for the past two games, also may not play due to injury, which means DaJuan Morgan will be moving over from backup strong safety. Cornerback Maurice Leggett may also spend some time as safety, as he played some safety in college.

“It’s an area of concern, obviously, for us,” coach Todd Haley said Wednesday. “But we’ve been cross-training some of those corners to be alert in emergency situations if we were to have something happen. But it’s an area of concern right now. It will be tenuous to say the least as we go forward, at least for this week.”

Leggett signed with the Chiefs as a rookie free agent last year out of Division II Valdosta State. He made three starts last year for the Chiefs as a cornerback.

“He’s gotten a bunch of reps,” Haley said. “Being out there and actually running routes is a little different. But I feel like at least we’re ahead of the curve with him and having a little foresight in the big picture to understand that one of those guys might have to play there at some point.”

Mike Brown will be the only experienced safety on the field on Sunday.

“We’ll be OK. You only need two [safeties],” said Brown, the starting strong safety. “It does hurt losing Jarrad and Jon. They’re very good players. But DaJuan is going to step in and play well. He’s young and ready to play and got a little juice in him. He’s excited. This is a great opportunity for him to show what he can do, to show the Chiefs fans what he’s all about.”

Fans Petition to De-Activate RB Johnson

With RB Larry Johnson only 75 yards away from breaking Priest Holmes’ franchise rushing record, some fans have begun a petition to keep Johnson sidelined.

“We are asking you, as fans of this team, this organization, and of the pride that this city has in the Chiefs, please deactivate Larry Johnson. Please do not let his name sit atop the all-time rushing leaders in Kansas City Chiefs history,” the petition says. “He has never represented anything close to the values that we have for our Chiefs and it would be another dagger to the fans that continue to support this proud franchise.

Holmes leads the Chiefs with 6,070 yards rushing all-time; Johnson currently has 5,996 yards.

“While we are thankful for his service, we feel that Larry has been a black eye on the organization and has no business being mentioned” among the team’s all-time greats, the petition continues.

“We are asking this as a favor to those of us who have supported this team long, long, long before you were brought in,” the petition continued. “We will support you through thick and thin — you will find out that we are a loyal, loyal bunch. … However, allowing Larry Johnson to attain a record is something that can never be erased.”

Johnson embroiled himself in controversy earlier this season when he got himself suspended after using a homosexual slur twice in two days after a disparaging loss to the Chargers. Johnson has certainly not been his All-Pro self from a few years ago, as he is only averaging 2.7 yards/carry this year, far short of his 4.4 YPC career average.
