Chiefs Shellacked by Chargers, 43-14
In a game the San Diego Chargers had to win to maintain an one-game lead over the Denver Broncos in the AFC West, Philip Rivers and the Chargers came out firing against the Kansas City Chiefs, who they trounced by the score of 43-14 on Sunday.
Rivers completed two touchdown passes to TE Antonio Gates, and the Chiefs allowed RB LaDainian Tomlinson to look like a shade of his former self as he scored on two rushing touchdowns as well.
The Chargers dominated on every side of the ball, as they relied on Chiefs turnovers to set up easy scores all game. The Chargers scored on each of four turnovers by the Chiefs, including a strip sack/fumble from Chiefs QB Matt Cassel.
“You can’t give a good team that’s playing really well right now 28 points off turnovers,” Cassel said. He finished 19-of-31 for 178 yards, with one touchdown and one interception.
Rookie coach Todd Haley, who has milked three wins out of the Chiefs so far this season, hoped that his young team would take “another baby step” with the game.
“But if you turn the ball over it’s going to get out of hand quick, which is exactly what happened,” Haley said.
The one bright spot for the Chiefs would be WR Chris Chambers, who they signed a few weeks back after the Chargers released him. Chambers caught seven passes for 70 yards and a score, as he’s become comfortable in the Chiefs’ No. 1 receiving role with WR Dwayne Bowe out four games.
